就在2001年9/11的第一架劫持飞机撞击世贸中心前20分钟，科尔号航空母舰的前指挥官表示，他当时身在中央情报局总部，警告说可能需要一场针对美国本土的灾难性袭击，美国才会认识到奥萨马·本·拉登所构成的威胁。

然后，他那令人毛骨悚然的预测变成了现实。

“在我说完那句话后20分钟，第一架飞机撞上了北塔，”退役海军指挥官柯克·利波尔德回忆道。“当飞机撞上南塔时，我正要离开总部。”

不到一年之前，利波尔德还在指挥科尔号，当时基地组织自杀式炸弹袭击者在也门袭击了这艘驱逐舰，造成17名美国水手死亡，37人受伤。

二十五年后，他说这一时间点仍然在强化一个美国不能忘记的教训，即恐怖主义的毁灭性代价。

Just 20 minutes before the first hijacked plane struck the World Trade Center, the former commander of the USS Cole says he was inside CIA headquarters warning that it could take a catastrophic attack on American soil for the country to recognize the threat posed by Osama bin Laden.

Then, his chilling prediction became reality.

"Twenty minutes after I said that, the first plane hit the North Tower," retired Navy Commander Kirk Lippold recalls. "I was literally leaving the headquarters when the plane hit the South Tower."

Less than a year earlier, Lippold was commanding the USS Cole when al Qaeda suicide bombers attacked the destroyer in Yemen, killing 17 American sailors and injuring 37.

Twenty-five years later, he says the timing still reinforces a lesson America cannot afford to forget about the devastating cost of terrorism.
