As we at TIME set out to mark America's 250th birthday this year, our approach was as expansive as the country: we asked 250 experts, across 10 categories, to tell us about something that they believe captures a defining element of American life today.
The items they selected are not all the products of the
U.S. alone, nor are our contributors all American by birth or citizenship. But all have made the country their home.
